Brunching Around Town With Tish – Murphy’s

Murphy's delicious mimosa!

Murphy’s delicious mimosas!

Hands down, brunch is my favorite meal! On any given Sunday around town you can find me enjoying brunch. There’s something about having the option of breakfast, lunch or a mixture of both that gets me excited about the meal. My love for brunch has inspired me to start a series on Tish Around Town called Brunching Around Town. In this series, I will cover my favorite brunch spots around Atlanta.

There are countless places in Atlanta to have brunch, so I decided to start the Brunching Around Town series with Murphy’s, which is a favorite to many in Atlanta. Murphy’s describe their restaurant as a perfect combination of upscale comfort food, gracious service, a cozy setting and excellent value. I totally agree!

I have a little confession. I have lived in Atlanta for over 14 years, and Murphy’s has always been on my list of places to try until last month, and now you can’t keep me away from this place! My first visit was with one of my brunch buddies, then a second time with my ‘Mister’, and I’m already thinking about going back again.

Both of my dining experiences were amazing, and I was lucky enough to get the same fabulous server, Lorne, both times. My brunch usually starts off with one of my favorite brunch beverages: a mimosa, bellini or bloody mary. I tried both the mimosa and berry bellini and they were equally delicious. Another added bonus about Murphy’s is they have a bakery, so you are served a variety of fresh breads with homemade preserves to snack on before your meal.

I usually gauge a brunch spot on how they prepare the classic breakfast dishes, so I’m always looking for a tasty waffle, pancake or French toast. I tried a few things on the brunch menu but I really enjoyed the Hazelnut Crusted French Toast & Corned Beef Hash. Some of the other popular brunch dishes are the Eggs T. Murphy, Crab Cakes Benedict, Southwest Frittata & Chilaquiles, to name a few. Is your mouth watering yet?

Check out Murphy’s if you are in the mood for a great brunch that will cater to your comfort food taste buds. Also, Murphy’s has a wine bar with over 350 wines in stock with consultants on hand that will help you pick out the perfect bottle to take home.

At The Table With Tish – 10th & Piedmont

I truly believe that a life well lived should include new, interesting and fun experiences with people who also have that same zest for life. It is this passion for life that motivated me to create At The Table With Tish, hosted by yours truly, is my version of a Supper Club. It is a gathering of new and old friends that enjoy experiencing new foods, fabulous adult beverages and great conversation. I wanted to launch this event at just the right time, and Midtown Restaurant Week provided the perfect opportunity and I knew exactly where to go.

I picked 10th & Piedmont for their fun atmosphere, great food and craft cocktails, but I can’t leave out their International Vodka Bar with over 150 vodkas to choose from. I’ve been to 10th & Piedmont a few times, and each time I have a great dining experience, so I wanted share this with my followers. I was blessed to have 18 people attend with various backgrounds and social experiences, which made for a night of stimulating conversations and tons of laughter.

The evening started with cocktails and introductions. 10th & Piedmont has a large menu of cocktails and vodka flights to pick from. They also have a Vodka Passport Program that will allow you taste vodka from all over the world. We had a few people to signup for a passport and enjoy the vodka flights, which featured 4 different vodkas chilled on ice. Imagine that!

10th & Piedmont was gracious to provide our group with some delicious appetizers before dinner. Some people ordered from the 3-course restaurant week menu, and some ordered from the sharable dinner menu. This allowed the group to enjoy a variety of food from the two different menus. Looking around, I was reminded of a big family dinner. The food was so delicious that the group couldn’t help but share. They were passing dishes and sharing with each other, which is a spin on the traditional Supper Club.

The night was amazing and I owe a huge thanks to the staff at 10th & Piedmont and the attendees for making the event a success. Thanks to Bill for assisting me with coordinating the dinner, and to Sheneka for your attentive & personable service.

It was truly a night to remember; part of a life well lived.

Best Mexican Food In Town – Nuevo Laredo Cantina!

Welcome to Nuevo Laredo Cantina!

Welcome to Nuevo Laredo Cantina

Hola señoritos and señoritas! Hands down Nuevo Laredo Cantina is by far the best Mexican restaurant in Atlanta. Yep, I said it– the best, and obviously I’m not the only one who knows this to be true.  They have been voted “Best of Atlanta” by Atlanta Magazine since the first year they opened in 1992. The owner, Chance Evans has a simple formula: serve the best, most fresh, authentic Mexican fare at a reasonable price by an attentive staff in a casual environment.

Nuevo Laredo is located off the beaten path in an industrial park on the west side of town. The décor is simple with red checkerboard tablecloths, pictures of Hollywood stars on the wall and authentic Mexican artifacts and other items the owner collected from his trips to Mexico. If you go during peak hours expect a wait, but you can always pass the time outside on the patio or at the bar with some great margaritas.

I was at Nuevo Laredo last Friday night with my family to celebrate my brother graduating with his Masters in Accounting from Georgia State University–the other ‘GSU’. (For those of you that don’t know, I’m a proud alumni of Grambling State University, the real GSU). Back to the blog…Mexican food is a favorite with my family and being from Texas I grew up eating Tex-Mex along with authentic Mexican food (and yes there is difference). I consider myself a connoisseur of Mexican food so it took me a few years to finally find the best Mexican food in Atlanta. I have to thank my friend Cordell for sharing this jewel with me years ago.

The Benoits!

We started our meal with their delicious chips and salsa. And what’s a celebration without margaritas? Our refreshing margaritas coupled with the warm chips and authentic salsa was like a fiesta in our mouth! We bypassed having appetizers because the entree portions are filling and the food comes out fast.

I usually gage a Mexican restaurant based on how they prepare the classic dishes (guacamole, tacos, enchiladas, fajitas etc..), so I ordered one of my favorites, the carne asada and brisket tacos, which are traditionally prepared with lean flavorful meat, fresh cilantro and onions. My sister and brother both kept it simple by ordering the beef tacos and nachos. Mario changed it up and ordered the Chicken Santa Fe. They have a vast number of entrees so your choices are endless. Some of the other popular dishes include: Brisket Barbacoa, Chicken Mole, over-stuffed poblano Chili Rellenos, Lobster Tacos, and Enchiladas. No matter what you choose, you’ll be satisfied.

I want your feedback and comments. Have you been to Nuevo Laredo Cantina? What is your favorite Mexican food restaurant?

Serpas is “True Food”

Serpas

Serpas located in Old 4th Ward

Welcome to the first blog post of Tish Around Town (#TAT)! I’m really happy to start sharing my social experiences with you. My goal is to share my social world, and hope that you see something that can enhance and bring joy to your social life.

Picking the subject for my first post wasn’t an easy task. I have so many things I want to share, so many experiences I want to tell you about, but I had to narrow it down. I decided to start with a restaurant and though I was struggling to decide between some of my favorite restaurants, my confirmation came when I went to Serpas two weeks ago.

My partner in crime, Cherie, asked me for some suggestions for our friend Jamie’s birthday celebration. When selecting a restaurant food, service and ambiance, are the three things I look for. I suggested Serpas, Rathbun’s Steak, KR SteakBar, The Optimist and Sotto Sotto, which are some of my favorites (I will cover these in future blogs). She selected Serpas because it’s one of her favorites, and their menu can easily cater to both the foodie and non-foodie alike, which is a perfect selection for a group dinner.

Serpas is located in Atlanta, GA in the ‘Old 4th Ward’. It’s an old area with rich history that share the historical home of Civil Rights great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., among others. Now, this “old” ward has a new facelift and Serpas is a part of this revitalized charm. Once you arrive, you can enjoy the complimentary valet parking, and then you’re just steps away from a savory meal.

When you walk in you’re greeted with a new school design with old school charm. An exposed brick wall makes the restaurant feel homey, yet chic. The open kitchen invites your senses to embrace the sounds and smells of food that are sure to please.

Our night started with a few drinks and selfies with my husband (my “Mister”) and Cherie at the bar while we waited on the group. Serpas has an amazing bar and because they change their drink menu a few times a year, you can always find something new to try. We tried the Country Mule, which was a great play on the traditional Moscow Mule.

Our group arrived, and we were seated at our table. The meal started out with ordering a few appetizers to share. At Serpas, you can expect everything on the menu to look appetizing, and we narrowed our selections down to three: calamari, salmon chips and duck egg rolls. The appetizers were just amazing! We enjoyed all of them, but everyone really enjoyed the salmon chips the most.

The crab and mushroom-stuffed trout, the rib-eye topped with crab meat, and the duck breast were the three favorite dishes at the table. I had the rib-eye, and it was cooked and seasoned to perfection.

Serpas delivered excellently across the board. Well prepared food, great service and amazing ambiance is why Serpas is at the top of my list. Executive Chef/Owner, Scott Serpas, a New Orleans native, has used his many years of experience in the industry to create a perfect culinary dining experience. When you want a true culinary experience, come to the place where they give you “True Food”.

Make sure you check out Serpas for dinner or Sunday brunch. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
